Council accused of bullying residents over rubbish

Residents in the Northland town of Russell say they are being bullied by the district council into taking the region's waste.

The Far North District Council plans to truck non-hazardous rubbish to the Russell landfill for up to nine months while it finds a long-term solution.

Up to 100 residents have picketed the tip's gates, preventing trucks from dumping rubbish, since Monday.

David McKenzie, of the Russell Business Association, says people are angry that the council did not ask first.

However, the council says members of the Russell Protection Society and the Ratepayers Association were consulted on the plan last week.
