Hawke's Bay council approves air quality measures

9:22 pm on 26 November 2008

The Hawke's Bay Regional Council has agreed on measures to improve air quality in Napier and Hastings during the winter.

The council has to reduce smoke pollution levels by the winter of 2013 to comply with National Environmental standards.

On Wednesday it approved new regulations designed to reduce smoke pollution from domestic fires by 71% in Hastings and 47% in Napier by 2013.

The council says the key issue is phasing out existing woodburners, which breach the air pollution standard, and replacing them with burners which do comply.

Council policy manager Liz Lambert says the council will publicly notify the proposed new air quality regulations in December.

Ratepayers will have until the beginning of March to make submissions.
