Police who pulled over an 8-tonne tractor in rural Canterbury, found a boy behind the wheel during a routine traffic check in Southbridge on Saturday.
The 11-year-old boy was driving the JCB front-end loader behind his father who was in a truck and trailer.
Senior Sergeant Warren Newbury, of the Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit, says drivers need a class 2 license and generally have to be over 18 years to drive that type of vehicle.
The boy's father said he had not expected to be stopped.
He has been charged with aiding and abetting an unlicensed driver and faces a fine of up to $1000.
