A passenger on a cruise ship visiting Napier had to be rescued on Tuesday after he fell off a wharf at the port.
Police spokesperson Kris McGehan says the Dutchman, 75, was taking photographs of vintage cars parked on a wharf when he stepped backwards and fell about five metres into the water.
Ms McGehan says one of the staff of the cruise ship Voledam jumped into the water and rescued the man.
The passenger was taken to Hawke's Bay hospital in Hastings for treatment and is expected to rejoin the ship in Tauranga later in the week.
