Much of Southland, central and southern Otago are under snow.
Falls in some parts of Southland are up to 20cm. Schools are closed and farmers have been forced to move stock.
Southland Federated Farmers says most farmers will be prepared but the unseasoned nature of the storm has surprised many.
MetService says more snow will fall throughout Wednesday before clearing in the evening.
