Police dog stabbed during AOS callout

A police dog has been stabbed during an Armed Offenders Squad callout in Porirua.

Officers went to a property in the Camborne area about 7am with a warrant to arrest a man on suspected drug related offences.

Police say the man tried to escape, and, when confronted by an AOS member, stabbed himself with a large kitchen knife.

They say the man refused to let go of the knife and officers used a taser to prevent him inflicting further harm on himself.

The police dog, Ila, received a deep slash across the top of her nose during the altercation and is undergoing surgery.

Ila was National Police Dog champion last year is due to defend her title in upcoming weeks.

A 42-year old Napier man was taken to hospital for surgery. Police say he will be facing charges.
