The Government and the Auckland Regional Council have unveiled the Rugby World Cup fan centre and cruise ship terminal they plan to build on Auckland's Queens Wharf.

The plan is to build a temporary 6000 square metre structure to be a party venue for rugby fans as well as an information centre and cruise ship terminal. Two cargo sheds on the wharf would be demolished in the development.

The Government will pay $9 million to build the centre while the regional council will upgrade the wharf.

However the Historic Places Trust hopes to meet the pair in a bid to save two cargo sheds which a heritage reports says have significant value.

The council chairman Mike Lee and Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully say they will consult the Trust but doubt the sheds will remain.
