Giraffe being transported to Auckland

10:48 am on 3 November 2008

A giraffe is being transported over the Port Hills of Christchurch on Monday evening.

An adolescent male giraffe, Kijana, is being relocated from Orana Park to a private wildlife reserve 65km north of Auckland.

Orana Park says the trip will begin at 6pm. Kijana will be transported through Sumner, over the Port Hills, to Lyttelton.

From there he will travel by ship to the Port of Onehunga and then by road again to the Keystone Wildlife Reserve.

Orana says Kijana is being moved to avoid inbreeding and because the herd already has a dominant male.
