A North Shore city councillor has made a formal complaint to police after confidential emails were forwarded to a Sunday newspaper from his council email account.
Ken McKay says he left his computer logged on in a councillors' work room last Thursday and it appears someone forwarded the emails to a reporter while he was out of the room.
Mr McKay says he finds it appalling and considers the act to be identity theft.
He says only a limited number of people have access to the room and the action was clearly malicious.
The council has also reported the incident to police and is reviewing its internal security.
