Police in Taranaki have released the name of a farmer they believe was electrocuted on Friday afternoon as he was installing an electric fence.

He was 43-year-old Stephen Bernard Potroz.

Senior constable Alistair Balsom says the incident happened at Te Rata east of Inglewood, when Mr Potroz was running an electric fence up a hill near powerlines.

Mr Balsom says it appears the fencing wire came into contact with overhead powerlines.

He says a Department of Labour investigation should be completed next week.
