Rotorua police say skeletal remains of a human body found near the forestry township of Murupara could have been there for decades.
The remains were found by a pair of hunters on Sunday, at a recently logged forest plantation about 10 kilometres from the Bay of Plenty township.
Criminal investigators, disaster victim identification specialists and forensic experts from Environmental Science and Research have been examining the remains and the site.
DNA testing will be required to identify the deceased, police say.
