A residents' survey will be sent out to households to test the level of support in Dunedin for a new stadium.
The $188 million roofed stadium is not yet a certainty, although most of the funding has been conditionally approved by the Dunedin City and Otago Regional councils.
The $7000 study is being funded by lobby group Stop The Stadium, three city councillors and private donors.
It will be undertaken by two researchers at the University of Otago School of Business.
Researcher John Williams says council-commissioned surveys last year found majority support for the stadium.
But Dr Williams says he has used them in class as examples of biased surveys. However, new information has come to light since then, which may have changed people's minds.
Five thousand randomly selected Dunedin households will receive the survey in the post by mid-November, and preliminary results should be available before Christmas.
Stadium plans explained
The group making plans for the new sports stadium will travel throughout Otago during the next fortnight to explain the plans to residents.
The project's commercial manager, Guy Hedderwick, says presentations will be held in Wanaka, Alexandra, Queenstown, Roxburgh, Balclutha and Oamaru.
Mr Hedderwick says the aim is to ensure that residents outside Dunedin feel involved in and informed about the project.
