Friends and family members of a Falun Gong practitioner say they fear for her safety, following her removal from New Zealand over a visa issue.
Peng Wang left Auckland earlier this week but apparently did not make her connection to Beijing following a stop in Kuala Lumpur.
Immigration New Zealand says Mrs Wang was not deported and paid for her own ticket to leave the country on Thursday.
Auckland JP Poutama Tsoi, who has been working to locate her, says Mrs Wang's husband is a New Zealand resident and she should be given assistance on that basis.
He says Immigation New Zealand is wrong to claim that Mrs Wang chose to leave and that she bought her own ticket, and wants officials to produce documents to prove the Falun Gong practitioner left of her own free will.
An Immigration New Zealand spokesperson says Peng Wang had the choice of leaving under a removal order or being deported - which would have meant she could not return to New Zealand for five years.
A spokesperson for the Immigration Minister's office says it is possible Mrs Wang has been caught up in the air travel problems caused by volcanic ash from Iceland.
