Authors disappointed with NZ response to Fiji decree

The New Zealand Society of Authors says it is disappointed with the Government's response to a draft media decree in Fiji.

A three-day consultation was carried out last week on the draft decree, under which journalists and publishers in Fiji could be jailed for five years or fined up to $500,000 for breaching it.

Society president Tony Simpson says this is a serious matter and the New Zealand Government should speak out more strongly against it.

He says the future for press freedom in Fiji looks bleak.
