Police in Levin are investigating a robbery in Shannon in which a woman received a stab wound to her thigh.

They say the woman, 40, was taken to Palmerston North Hospital after she was approached by another woman near the public toilets on Balance Street at 6.15pm on Wednesday and asked to empty her pockets.

Police say her dog bit the offender, who left the scene with money and prescription medication.
