The Maori Language Commission hopes people will make a meal out of this year's Maori language week.
Waatea News reports it has chosen food as the theme for language acquisition and use for the last week of July.
Te Taura Whiri acting chief executive Wayne Ngata says everybody interacts with kai on a daily basis.
He also says Taura Whiri is considering repeating a successful initiative of distributing booklets of Maori words and phrases through supermarkets.
