Two men convicted of sexually abusing schoolboys in Christchurch in the 1970s have been granted early prison releases.

Catholic brothers Roger Moloney and Bernard McGrath, who belonged to the Order of St John of God, have served less than half their sentences.

In August 2008, Moloney began a prison sentence of two years and nine months for sexually abusing five boys at Marylands School.

Upon his release in September last year, the Parole Board noted that although Moloney, 74, still denies any wrongdoing, it is unlikely that he will offend further.

Conditions of Moloney's release include that he cannot contact his victims or anyone under the age of 16.

In April 2006, McGrath was given a five-year prison term for multiple sexual offences against nine boys aged between seven and 15 years.

In paroling him more than two years ago, the Parole Board noted that McGrath did not pose an undue risk to the community.
