Airline operators shut out of Milford Sound

Airline operators using Milford Sound are to collectively seek legal advice after the Department of Conservation shut out several companies through its new concession plan.

At a special meeting on Wednesday night, the Queenstown Milford User Group resolved to collectively mount a legal campaign over what they say is an injustice by the department.

Last week, DOC awarded concessions for 23 airline operators to fly into Fiordland National Park to help mitigate noise.

As many as five companies, which have traditionally flown tourists into the area, will no longer be able to do so.

Chairman of the user group Lloyd Matheson says it will consult lawyers about anomalies, including the decision by the department to allow operators with noisy aircraft, while excluding companies with quiet machines.

Mr Matheson says the group intends to fight DOC any way it can.

It says resolving the issue could take years if legal proceedings are lodged.
