Easter road toll rises to 11

3:20 pm on 6 April 2010

A serious crash investigation team is on the way to a fatal road accident in the Gisborne area believed, to have happened over the Easter holiday weekend.

Police say a teenager has been found dead in a car that had left Tiniroto Road, between Gisborne and Wairoa.

They say the young man's father went looking for the young man after he failed to return home and found the car.

The road toll now stands at 11.

Police say alcohol and speed were the biggest factors behind the number of deaths.

Inspector John McClelland says many of the deaths from seven of the crashes were preventable and drivers need to take personal responsibility to try and do things right.

Mr McClelland says the road toll is the worst since 1994.
