The 53 judges from the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and High Court were attending their annual conference and staying at the Chateau in Tongariro when they fell ill.

The judicial office told Checkpoint with John Campbell 18 of them caught the bug but all have either recovered or nearly recovered.

The conference organisers have informed the Waikato DHB's population health service of the outbreak, and it was investigating the cause.

The Chateau said it wasn't able to talk about its guests.
