Government agencies apologise for a blunder that led to police searching a woman's house for her dead baby's body; one person killed every 10 days on Otago and Southland roads; Otago festival of the arts to begin on Friday.

NZ Herald

The New Zealand Herald leads with the funeral service on Wednesday of Austin Hemmings, 44, who was fatally stabbed while assisting a woman, who was calling for help in central Auckland. His family are pictured releasing doves at the funeral in Devonport.

The Herald also says the US Senate is to vote on 'Plan B' of a revised US $700 billion Wall Street bailout after the House of Representatives sparked economic turmoil by rejecting the first version.

Dominion Post

The Dominion Post says two Government agencies have been forced to apologise to a grieving Palmerston North mother for a blunder that led to police officers searching her house for her dead baby's body.

A mix up by Work & Income prompted police to turn up at her home claiming they had information her four month old son's body was in the freezer. In fact he'd been buried two months earlier and she had merely contacted the agency for a food grant.

The Press

The Press says Christchurch is sitting on a 'timebomb' of neglected Asian health problems. A new report says Christchurch's second largest ethnic group behind Europeans has significant health needs that are not being met and cites sexual health, obesity and addiction amoung the worst problems.

Singer Hayley Westenra is pictured leading girls to school on her bicycle in Ghana.

ODT

The Otago Daily Times leads with fears over the southern road toll: one person has been killed every 10 days on Otago and Southland roads this year. If the trend continues, police say the district would post its worst record for more than five years.

With only one day to go, the [ODT also looks at the Otago festival of the arts: the Spanish Camut Band has arrived in Dunedin amid a 'sand storm', requiring 15kg of fine sand on which to perform on Friday night.
