There were 88 bank robberies in 2009, 30 more than the year before.
The New Zealand Banking Association, which compiled the figures, says there are usually 50 to 60 attempted robberies as well each year.
Spokesperson John Bishop says the association is not sure why there was an increase in the number of robberies last year, but it is generally thought to be related to economic hardship.
Mr Bishop says not all robberies involve weapons. He says often someone will pass a note to the teller with an implied threat.
