A Hokianga community whose school is in crisis welcomes the appointment of a commissioner to run it. But it says that will not be enough to save it.
Education Minister Chris Carter announced on Tuesday a statutory manager will be appointed to run Opononi Area School, after a highly critical ERO report.
A spokesperson for local parents, Lena Adams, says there is cautious support for that decision.
But she says current staffing and funding levels must be frozen immediately - to save the school from further decline.
Mrs Adams says the school has lost 30% of its roll and now stands to lose $250,000 in funding and several teaching positions.
