The father of a 20-year-old at the centre of a fatal drink-driving crash in Blenheim has criticised the lowering of the drinking age.
The drinking age was lowered to 18 a decade ago. The Government is waiting for a final report from the Law Commission on whether to raise it again to 20.
On Friday night a 51-year-old died when a car police say was fleeing from a checkpoint crashed into her vehicle.
The father of the 20-year-old driver, Peter Stubbs, says he has tried very hard to influence her ideas about drinking, but failed.
Mr Stubbs does not believe 18-year-olds have the ability to make adult decisions about drinking.
He says he has been battling with his daughter about the issue for years.
