More evacuations near Auckland slip

Nine homes have now been evacuated near a precarious cliff face slip in Auckland.

Manukau City Council says it still expects the slip in Bucklands Beach to collapse at any time and could fall close to the evacuated homes.

The properties, on Clovelly Road, include one owned by the former Mayor Sir Barry Curtis, which has been condemned.

Manukau City Council spokesperson Rick Walden says the council hopes hope no-one else will need to be evacuated.

Earlier this week, five dwellings across three sections on Clovelly Road were evacuated.

Mr Walden says residents of the last four properties have been moved out as a precaution.

He says because the area is a danger zone, these residents will only be allowed to return briefly to remove possesions.

Mr Walden says it is important that people stay away from the area.

He says the decision to move the residents is distressing, but life must always take precedence and the council must err on the side of caution.
