Police in Christchurch say window etching, a type of tagging in which words or images are cut into glass, is becoming a costly problem.
Constable David Woodbury says there has been a spate of window etching in the Moorhouse Ave and Lincoln Road areas during the past few weeks.
Mr Woodbury estimates the damages bill at more than $50,000.
Window etching is happening in most parts of the city, usually late at night, he says.
He is asking the public to be on the lookout for it and to contact police with any information.
