A Christchurch City Council member has been cleared of accusations that he breached the Electoral Act.
A complaint was made that Councillor David Cox breached the act by spending more than was allowed on his campaign and filing a false return.
Councillors are allowed to spend up to $30,000.
The police investigation established Mr Cox spent $1500 more than what he declared, but did not exceed the $30,000 threshold.
Police say the failure to declare the additional funding was explainable and not a criminal act.
