Those making the pilgrimage to Gallipoli this ANZAC Day are being advised to be properly prepared for the terrain in Turkey.
Veterans Affairs New Zealand says many visitors arrive at the peninsula without the right equipment for the long walk and extreme temperatures at Gallipoli.
The agency says about 20,000 visitors attend the ANZAC Day commemorations on the Gallipoli peninsula every year.
But some don't wear the right clothing for the climate, which can vary from sub-zero temperatures to the upper-20s.
Also, many have only jandals or other flimsy footwear for walking the 8km distance between the memorial sites.
The agency says being poorly prepared for the event is at odds with the image of ANZAC practicality.
