Public ideas sought on food labelling

A panel is to discuss whether food labels should tell buyers when a product has been genetically modified.

Consumers and businesses are asking for clearer labels as new technologies change food production.

A five-member panel will discuss labels used on food and alcohol in New Zealand and Australia.

It has issued a paper to stimulate debate on these and other topics and is asking for public reaction.

The panel says questions are being asked about whether information is displayed consistently, correctly and in an easy to understand form.

It says consumers are concerned about genetic modification and irradiation and it will look at what details should go on the labels of affected products.
