A support group for Asian victims of crime says criminals who target the Asian community should face tougher penalties.
Anitelea Chan Kee, 22, was found guilty in the High Court at Auckland on Thursday of murdering Indian liquor store-owner Navtej Singh in June 2008.
Chan Kee and five other men were also convicted of aggravated robbery.
Asian Anti-Crime Group chairman Peter Low says Asian retailers are popular targets for criminals, because they work hard and are often perceived as being wealthy.
However, Asian Council on Reducing Crime chair Rosa Chow says she does not believe the Asian community is a target for serious crime.
The council is organising this year's Asian Community Safety Expo in Auckland on Saturday.
Ms Chow says the expo is about providing the Asian community with the skills and resources to protect themselves and their property.
Tighter liquor licensing laws urged
Manukau City Council Manurewa ward member Daniel Newman fears another life will be lost in the community through violent crime, unless liquor licensing laws are tightened.
Mr Newman says one guilty verdict does not address the social cost of availability of alcohol in his community.
He told Morning Report the Randwick Park area is still suffering because of the sale of alcohol at corner stores. He said residents must be given legal power to challenge both new and renewed liquor licence applications.
Answers still wanted over delay
The family of the slain shopkeeper say they are waiting for answers to why it took police and ambulance officers so long to come to his aid.
Help took half-an-hour to arrive after Mr Singh was shot at his liquor store by an armed robber.
Family spokesperson Daljit Singh told Morning Report they do not want such a situation to occur again.
He said the family respects the jury's decision to convict only one of the six accused of murder, although they were expecting more convictions.
Mr Singh says they are happy the trial is at an end although they want apologies from the accused so they know they are truly remorseful.
