NZEI says it will file over gender discrimination

8:48 pm on 31 August 2015

Teachers' union the Educational Institute says it will file a case against the Government over gender discrimination within the next year.

The planned action comes after the College of Midwives filed a High Court action against the government today, arguing midwives are being paid less because they are women.

The Educational Institute said it would take its case to the Employment Court on behalf of nearly 600 education support staff who work with pre-school children in special education.

National Secretary Paul Goulter said the government had ignored the union's efforts, saying the issue would be dealt with through "bargaining rounds".
