Hearing association hopes to restore some finances

Elderly members of the Whangarei Hearing Association hope an auction on Saturday will restore a fraction of its shattered finances.

The High Court ordered the association's liquidation last year, citing financial mismanagement.

Crown Law has investigated members' complaints that a couple who took over the organisation sold the clubrooms and spent money on vehicles, furniture and travel.

Colin Edwards, who helped the club recover some items bought by the couple, says goods including whiteware, a leather lounge suite and bedroom furniture are being sold at auction.

The couple at the centre of the controversy, Mark Whitfield and Erika Kemp, are due in court in September to answer questions about the association's finances.
