Commuter train line in capital closed after slip

8:02 am on 24 July 2008

The Wellington - Johnsonville train line is closed after a slip caused a minor derailment amid heavy rain on Wednesday evening.

KiwiRail says buses will replace services to all stations on Thursday morning. Passengers travelling into Wellington should allow extra time for the journey.

Ontrack says the derailment was not serious. The front wheels of the train came off the rails near Crofton Downs, stopping all movement on the single track.

About 50 passengers on the 7.32pm service from Wellington were aboard. They had to wait almost two hours before they could be ferried between stations by minibuses.

Ontrack says it expects the line to be closed until at least mid-afternoon.

The Wellington - Petone line is also being monitored because sea swells are threatening to wash onto the track.
