High winds, freezing temperatures forecast

1:05 pm on 12 June 2015

MetService is forecasting high winds for central New Zealand, and freezing temperatures with snow to low levels in the lower South Island.

Severe gales gusting to 130 kilometres an hour are expected in Central Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa and western Nelson from this afternoon and into the evening.

A weather watch for snow and cold temperatures is also in place for Fiordland, Southland and Otago overnight and into Saturday.

MetService says temperatures will fall this evening, and snow in the far south could disrupt roads in northern Southland, around the Catlins and in the higher Dunedin suburbs.

Strong winds are also forecast for Southland, Clutha and Dunedin and a strong wind watch is also in place for Northern Canterbury, Nelson and Marlborough.
