Public asked to help save Auckland heritage homes

9:09 am on 20 July 2008

Heritage groups are urging the public to help save thousands of character homes in danger of being demolished in Auckland.

About a dozen groups have asked the Auckland City Council not to remove demolition and removal protections on homes built before the 1940s.

The groups claim thousands of homes in residential zone 2 suburbs such as Epsom, Herne Bay and St Heliers will be affected.

A spokesperson for the heritage groups, Kate Tomlie-Bowden, says the changes would allow almost half of pre-1940s character homes to be demolished or removed without resource consent.

The council has issued proposed alterations to the protections and is asking for public feedback by 7 August.
