Man who deliberately caused fatal crash jailed

10:42 pm on 15 February 2010

A man who killed a woman by deliberately driving his car into hers will spend at least 14 years in jail.

Tony Worrell was found guilty of murder after his car ploughed into one being driven by 26-year-old Katie Powles in South Auckland in 2008.

He was sentenced at the High Court in Auckland on Monday.

Worrell was also found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm to Brett Robinson, whose car he also hit, and two counts of attempting to intentionally damage a vehicle knowing danger to life may result.

The Crown says Worrell facilitated the crashes in an attempt to kill himself. He was twice the legal drink-drive limit at the time.

During sentencing, defence lawyer Matthew Goodwin said Worrell has always been remorseful and recognises alcohol has been his nemesis. However, Worrell will appeal against all the convictions.

Mr Goodwin says there is a question of liability and it is unusual for vechile cases to be charged as murder rather than manslaughter.
