Motorists heading south on State Highway 1 towards Taupo on Sunday will face a detour because of roadworks.
The road is being realigned to improve visibility for motorists entering a new roundabout at the intersection of State Highway 1 and State Highway 5 at Wairakei.
Traffic en route to Taupo will be diverted down Link Road, just before the junction, between 6.30am and 7pm.
A spokesperson for roading contractor Fulton Hogan says the detour will ease congestion.
The works are part of the 16-kilometre East Taupo Arterial project, which is scheduled for completion by March 2011.
