Lincoln University plans to start protecting students from annual fee increases next year.

The University said from next year, the tuition charge that students pay in their first year will be the annual fee for the duration of their studies.

Deputy vice-chancellor for international and business development at Lincoln University, Jeremy Baker, said it would be the first university in New Zealand to charge set fees for domestic students.

It said students' fees would remain the same each year for the minimum time it took to complete their qualification.

He said the policy was fair and should also encourage more enrolments.

Mr Baker says Lincoln introduced set fees for international students two years ago.
