An Auckland man has been jailed for more than two years for defrauding the tax department of nearly $40,000.

Andrew Myer McGirr, 43, was sentenced yesterday after being found to have fraudulently claimed GST refunds on behalf of several fictitious businesses.

McGirr filed the claims for a property maintenance business that wasn't operating while serving home detention in 2010.

Inland Revenue said he received $22,375 in false refunds and helped another person get $15,177 worth of fraudulent refunds.
