Rise in use of weapons concerns judge

The Principal Youth Court judge says he's worried about a significant rise in knife assaults in the past decade.

Principal Youth Court judge Andrew Becroft says between 1995 and 2007, the number of cases before the Youth Court involving assault with a weapon more than doubled.

He says when a knife is introduced into a volatile situation, that can literally become a matter of life and death.

On Thursday, a High Court judge sentencing two men for a fatal stabbing in Auckland said Parliament may need to reconsider the law on possession of knives.

Justice Asher said it was likely the victim, Daryl Graydon, would still be alive if his attackers had not been carrying knives, and it may be time for MPs to look at strengthening the law.

Justice Minister Simon Power plans to raise the issue with Ministry officials on Monday.
