New Zealand mountain runner Melissa Moon has conquered a new peak - winning the annual race to the top of New York's Empire State Building.

The 40-year-old from climbed the 86 floors, or 1576 steps, to the building's observation deck in just 13 minutes and 13 seconds on Tuesday.

Moon says before the race she was concerned about the squeeze reaching the stairwell, but found herself in fourth and then caught the race leader on the 15th floor.

The Wellington runner says she had to be bit aggressive as she got past and then just kept the momentum going.

Moon says she intends to return to New York next year to defend her title.

Germany's Thomas Dold claimed his fifth successive victory in 10 minutes and 16 seconds.
