A Christchurch man who died in a car crash on his way to swim at the beach was so drunk he would have been at serious risk of drowning, the coroner has found.
Kyle Evan Tiweka, died in November 2013 after he failed to take a bend, hitting a tree stump before rolling.
The police estimated Mr Tiweka was driving at 130km/h and had a with a blood alcohol level more than four times the legal limit.
Coroner Tim Scott found that Mr Tiweka was a heavy drinker and, had he gone swimming at the surf beach, he would have placed himself at serious risk of drowning.
Meanwhile, Coroner Richard McElrea found Jason Bradley Burford's death in Southland's North Mavora Lake in August 2013 was party due to the wrong outboard motor being attached to a boat.
Mr Burford died of cold water immersion when the boat he and two friends were in sank in the 7degC lake.
A 25 horsepower motor weighing about 50kg was attached to a bracket intended to hold motors of up to 10 horsepower.
The bracket gave way and the three men ended up in the water. All were wearing lifejackets but only two made it to shore.
The coroner recommended Maritime New Zealand and Water Safety New Zealand highlight the circumstances of the mishap and said lessons could be drawn from them.
