Police have named a Christchurch baby who died of head injuries as Aaliyah Ashlyn Chand.

The one-year-old girl was taken to hospital on Tuesday night and died next day, with her parents at her bedside.

Police said the girl was taken to hospital by her regular babysitter on Tuesday night with serious head injuries.

They said they were waiting for the results of a post-mortem conducted yesterday, and their investigations were continuing.

Scene examinations have been completed at the babysitter's property on Worcester Street and at the parents' address in Addington.

A homicide investigation is underway into the serious head injuries sustained by the baby, but the police will not speculate on whether charges will be laid.
