Police have revealed that a man who was found dead in the Manawatu town of Woodville on Sunday had been shot.
They say they are still trying to find out who was responsible.
They have named the victim as 49-year-old James Whatuira of Pahiatua.
They also said a post mortem conducted today revealed Mr Whatuira died from a single gunshot wound.
But they are not giving out any more details.
They said they have a lot of work to do to identify and locate whoever was responsible for Mr Whatuira's death.
His body was found on Sunday in Ormond Street but he did not live there.
Since the discovery, a team of 20 detectives has been working on the case and expect to be at the scene of the incident for at least another 48 hours.
Police said they were making good progress in speaking to people in the area and gaining information from them.
