Tourist dies after after flying wheel hits bus

8:00 pm on 16 January 2010

A tourist has died after the bus he was travelling in was struck by a truck wheel on Auckland's southern motorway.

The critically injured man, who was in New Zealand to visit relatives, died in hospital on Friday afternoon.

He was Lam Xuan, 24, a Vietnamese student who was staying in Manukau on a student visa. Three other people were injured in the accident, which the Waitemata Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

The bus was travelling between Otahuhu and Mt Wellington when it was struck by the wheel, which had flown off a Toll Translink truck and bounced over a median strip at just after 7.30am on Thursday.

A second wheel on the same axle also dislodged, but remained on the same side of the meridian strip, police say.

Driver stood down from duties

NZ Bus general manager of operations Zane Fulljames, whose Waka Pacific bus was involved in the crash, says it is working with police to establish what happened.

Mr Fulljames says the driver is uninjured but severely shaken and has been stood down from his duties so support can be provided to him.

Toll New Zealand says it is co-operating fully with investigators and is also conducting an internal inquiry.
