A former Morrinsville scoutmaster and church youth leader has been jailed for sex offences against two boys.

Donald McKenzie, 67, pleaded guilty to 15 charges four days into his trial last month in the Hamilton District Court.

Judge David Wilson sentenced him to 16-years in prison with a non parole period of eight years, today.

The offending took place against one boy, aged 15, over a six-month period in the 1990s and against another boy over a three-year period, when the victim was first aged 12.

Judge Wilson called it repetitious offending and an abuse of trust that involved a high level of planning and grooming of the boys.

The court heard that McKenzie's offending had had a devastating effect on both victims and caused one of them to turn to alcohol and drugs and attempt suicide.
