The van driver, 36-year-old teacher Andre Vogel, died - along with 16-year old student Gabriel Runge.

The other five students in the group, from the Noosa Pengari Steiner school in Queensland, returned home late last night and were at school this morning for a ceremony for their teacher and classmate.

Principal Allen Kloeden said the student still in New Zealand had woken from his coma and asked for his parents.

The whole school community was gladdened by the news, Mr Kloeden said.
