Police will not be laying charges following the death of a 24-year-old Dutch tourist struck by a taxi in the South Island town of Wanaka two months ago.

Coen van Rosmalen died in Beacon Point Road about 3.30am on 14 September.

It is believed Mr van Rosmalen was lying on the road, although witnesses described seeing him walking beside the road a short time earlier.

Police said today they have conducted a thorough investigation and the taxi driver would not be charged.

The matter has been referred to the Coroner.
