Campbell Paterson's remains were found in a chilly bin in the bush near Cairns after he disappeared just over a week ago.

Local police said Mr Paterson and the man accused of killing him, David Leslie Hickson, associated regularly, the ABC reported.

Mr Hickson was also accused of misconduct with a corpse.

Mr Paterson worked in Cairns, returning every few months to Napier where his wife and four children live.

Although he was not reported missing the police began a search after a tip-off.

The Cairns Post newspaper said his family was informed of the death on Thursday night and said his body was due to be returned to New Zealand tomorrow.
