They say a 50-year-old man fired shots at them after his car was stopped at a roadblock following a domestic incident at Kerepehi, north of Paeroa.

Officers returned fire, wounding the man. He remains in a serious but stable condition in Waikato Hospital.

Detective Inspector Mark Loper says police would like to speak to the occupants of two cars that were turned back after approaching the scene on State Highway 2 heading towards Paeroa just after the shooting.
